The Dawn Of Understanding: Three Years Later :: essays research papers
Throughout my life, the same scene in the television screen registered in different ways. The camera zooms in for the last shot of a lone hyena wheezing his way out of life. He may be dying of heat exhaustion or thirst or hunger, but his small eyes roll side to side slowly and then....just.....stop. Equally significant and striking is the close-up of the very violent death of a baby seal as a hyena simultaneously shakes him into submission and breaks his spine. The camera is always held steady; no one is shocked or upset yet the sense that something important has happened is always instilled in me. When I was younger I would cry during the sad moment in movies when someone died. The person or animal had a name and an identity which gave them a level of reality. My fascination for animals existed even then and I often followed with my eyes and imagination the lives of the documented animal. I turned away from the brashness of the lion tearing into the zebra because I turned away from all violence but I was too disgusted to feel any real compassion. Perhaps reality was harder to absorb than fiction. Perhaps these scenes weren't real to me because what I had seen of death in my own experience always involved sorrow and the cameramen felt none, the sun felt none and the narrator felt none. Later in my life I realized the zebra or coyote or prairie dog that was being forced to succumb to dehydration or starvation was real. I don't think that I had ever, consciously seen anything die before; watched the same close-up many times before but never really seen anything die. Insects perhaps; never a person, never a baby lemur, never a cat, never anything except within the confines of fiction. What my mind had seen as I sat there was the product of lighting and actors and a voice but unlike real fiction, this did not seem real. As I have lived in a city for most of my life and never truly experienced what wildlife was like, this was it; the cameras lent my alienated consciousness a sense of the reality experienced by the other inhabitants of this earth: the four legged (and sometimes two-legged) ones. I was being carried on the shoulders of Richard Nassau and Michael Drencher as they journeyed to the desserts of Africa and mountains of Peru.

Mandatory Child Development and Parenting Classes
There should be a law prohibiting teenage pregnancy.à It would be impossible to make such a law, since the countryââ¬â¢s prisons would be filled with fifteen year-old-mothers. A law should, however, be made requiring mandatory child development and parenting classes before high school graduation. The statistics concerning teenage pregnancy are frightening.à One teenager each minute becomes pregnant, in 2004 420,000 babies were born to teenage mother in the United States, and 67% of teenage mothers drop out of high school (Horizon Solutions, 2006).Three out of ten girls get pregnant before the age of twenty at an average of 750,000 girls per year (National Campaign, 2006). Girls as young as thirteen are becoming parents and often with no support from the equally young and inexperienced fathers.à The grandparents are then either forced to raise their grandchildren or the young unprepared girls are forced to give up their future plans to become parents much too early.à Mos t schools in the nation currently offer child development and parenting classes as electives for those who are interested in childcare.à Since most young teenagers will eventually become parents, however, it should be mandatory to prepare them for their future roles. Most public schools in the United States teach sexual education, which includes ways to prevent pregnancy.à Unfortunately, this has not significantly decreased the occurrences of teenage pregnancy.à When compared to the statistics of teenagers in other countries the united States ranks high in the number of pregnancies, because of the differences in how teenagers are prepared for parenting and the expectations for them (Guttmacher).à Part of the differences are that the young people in other countries are not taught to be ashamed to admit to having sex and are taught to be more responsible about preventing pregnancy.à In this country many adults are uncomfortable talking to their children about sex (Coloro so 228). The better young people are educated about and prepared for male-female relationships in early adolescence the less likely they are to give in to peer pressure (Campbell 51).In most schools, no student can graduate without learning about American History, government, English or science.à Students are taught how to have children and usually how to prevent it, but it is not required for them to learn how to care for the children after they have them.à Unless they come from large families, many young people have no idea how much responsibility is required in caring for an infant.à If they did, maybe they would take more precautions to avoid this until they were ready for the responsibility.à If a law was made to make it mandatory for all freshman high school students to take child development and parenting classes, all teenagers would have a better understanding of the responsibilities involved.à This would make them more likely to take better precautions to avo id teenage pregnancy.Parenting is not easy at any age, but when parenting is combined with dating, and trying to finish high school, it can be overwhelming.à When young girls discover they are about to become a parent, they can go through a range of emotions.à Some do not want to take on the responsibility of parenting.à These girls are faced with the difficult choice of abortion or adoption.à If she chooses to put her child up for adoption, she and the father both have to sign their parental rights over to the adoptive parents (Gay 6).à à Some of the girls feel happy about having a baby they may see it as playing house or as an accomplishment (American Academy, 2004).à These girls have no real idea how much responsibility is involved in caring for infants.à They often like the idea of caring for someone. The problem is the people who are currently taking the elective parenting courses are usually the ones who know something about caring for infants and are int erested in the subject.à These people already know a little of the responsibility and often are the ones least likely to be teen parents. By making the classes mandatory, those who think it is like playing house or have no idea about babies will get more information.à Many of these classes teach students what to expect throughout the first few years of life.à Infants especially in the first weeks of life need very much of the parentââ¬â¢s time and can be exhausting, and they cry a great deal (Preston 11). à The average day in the life of a mother with an infant consists of waking at approximately 3:00 a.m. and getting very little rest until late the next night.à It involves diaper changes, feedings and constant attention to someone helpless and fragile (Oââ¬â¢Callahan 66). When the young people actually begin to realize what life is like for a parent, they can see the consequences of being careless in sexual relationships.à In recent years a new trend has beco me part of child development class.à Many schools have started using programmable dolls, which cry during the night, need changed, fed and held.à These dolls are amazingly lifelike and can provide young people an idea of what it is really like to be a parent (Memorial Community, n.d.). Teaching young people what parenting is like is sometimes more effective than teaching them methods of birth control or about the risks of disease.à In addition to the dolls, child development and parenting courses teach young people how to cope when they do have children. The good news is the message is getting out.à The number of teenagers age fifteen to nineteen who have reported having sex has decreased by just over 13% since 1991 and the number of teen pregnancies has dropped by 36% in the same amount of time (National Campaign, 2006).à There was a trend in the country for a while where teens were not afraid for parents to know they were having sex, but they did not have enough fact s to keep from getting pregnant.à With the increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases, the education about the use of contraception has helped teenagers become more responsible about using birth control to avoid disease and thus pregnancy. If all school districts were mandated to require these classes using the teaching dolls and statistics as a requirement for graduation like they do math and science, students might have a better knowledge of what it takes to be parents.à This would help them know they wanted to wait until they were ready to have children.à It could teach them the financial, emotional and physical requirements involved in having and raising children.à Education is the key to knowledge and knowledge is required to make responsible choices.à In order to teach the teenagers in the United States to make responsible choices, there needs to be a law requiring the system to educate them.Works CitedCampbell, Dr. Ross. Recreation Management And Therapeutic Recreation - 905 Words
Every year new students entering into the School of Health and Human Performance in the programs of Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation take part in a two-day orientation. This orientation helps students gain a better understanding of recreation, learn about their programs, and create bonds with fellow classmates. Throughout the weekend this year, students were able to create memories with classmates whom they will be studying alongside over the course of their education. The orientation weekend served many different purposes for the students in both Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation. The first purpose of the retreat was to help students gain a better understanding of recreation. Many people, including myself before this orientation, believe that recreation is solely sports. However, that fact is far from true as recreation encompasses many different aspects such as art, music, photography, knitting, and running. Once students understood the different aspe cts of recreation they were able to learn more about their programs. This was done through having older students interact with new students, and by having professionals speak to the new students. The professionals were in both the Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation fields. Since my program of study is Recreation Management, I got to hear all about that field. In the speeches I learned how to get involved in recreation early on, how important managing recreation is, and about theShow MoreRelatedTaking a Look at Therapeutic Recreation for Adolescents1286 Words à |à 5 PagesTherapeutic Recreation Alison, J., Negley, S., Sibthorp, J. Sector Briefing Dtl Power Corporation - 7811 Words
Sector Briefing: DTL Power Corporation Brian Cunningham, Lindsay Fronzoli, Eddie Brown, Helen George, Montae Brockett CSEC 670 March, 2016 Introduction Our society today is ever more dependent upon electricity in all aspects of life. Keeping the power infrastructure throughout the United States secure and functioning properly should be considered a high priority for both private sector and government. Lacking properly functioning power caused by an outage has widespread impact not just on common conveniences being unavailable but also on critical areas such as emergency services, transportation, water distribution, communication and food production and storage. Power production can come from multitude of sources with different types of power plant facilities each with some sort of unique need; these sources include coal, natural gas, nuclear, wind, water also known as hydroelectric, solar, geothermal and biomass (U.S. Energy Information Administration). These energy sources are broken down into one of two categories, renewable or nonrenewable. Nonrenewable energy sources are sources, such as fossil fuels like coal, which are extracted from the earth and cannot be replenished quickly. Renewable sources of energy are sources that there is a seemingly endless supply and/ or can easily be replenished, such sources are solar, wind and water to name a few. Commercial electric generation came about in the late 19th century and was

The Historical Area Of Israel And Palestine - 1493 Words
The history of the geographical area substituting Israel and Palestine is one of war and bloodshed. For nearly three millennia people have been fighting over the ââ¬ËHoly Landââ¬â¢ in wars that were religious in their essence. An understanding of the historic background of the area is important to comprehend the present-day reasons for the complexity of the task of conflict resolution. The simplified timeline provided below is an attempt to summarise the most important events. Since the Israelitesââ¬â¢ conquest in approximately 1250BC, rule over the Holy Land went from hand to hand, including Israelite, Babylonian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Muslim control. This early history is tightly linked to the Jewish people and their displacement whichâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The public would not know of this agreement until the end of 1917, only three weeks after the Balfour Declaration, a letter granting royal British support for the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine, was issued. Suspicion grew between Arabs, Jews, and the British. In 1920, two years after the end of WWI, the area which used to be the Ottoman empire was split into mandates, giving the British control over Palestine. During the 1930s the Nazis gained power in Germany, leading to big waves of Jewish immigration to Palestine, especially during times of Jewish persecution between 1933 and 1945. This period was marked by Palestinian uprisings against the British Mandate, and after the Second World War had commenced in 1939 also by Jewish resistance to the British. In 1947, two years after the Nazis had been defeated and WWII had ended, the British government handed the issue of the Palestinian future, which had seen Jewish mass migration during and after the war, to the United Nations, which voted the partition of Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state. Despite Israeli attacks on Palestinian villages in early 1948, the British ended their mandate over Palestine on May 14th, now celebrated b y Israelis as Independence Day, by Palestinians lamented as ââ¬ËNakbaââ¬â¢ (catastrophe). Business Ethics and Social Response
Question: Discuss about the Business Ethics and Social Response. Answer: Introduction: Google is the most popular organization that had given its consumer the best search engine providing knowledge to the students, scholars and any ordinary person who needs to gain knowledge on a particular subject. Sitting at home and gaining knowledge without travelling to libraries and going through a number of books has made this platform preferable for millions of people. Google is often considered to be in the first position among all other such platform because of the huge search results that it provides. Besides, it has YouTube, google chrome, google + and many others which have gained attention. It has a huge fan base all over the world. However, Google although had made huge profits from its brand value and the positive aspects it have, it had failed miserably in maintaining privacy of the consumers. The various regulatory bodies have investigated and found out that although google claims to not indulge into consumers privacy there has been cases where such discrepancies are reported. The report will first establish the different strategies it had taken to make consumers happy, then the ways about how google should respect privacy of consumers at the same time of maintaining profit and lastly how to deal with the growing regulations of every nations that keep a strict eye on Googles different moves. Googles strategy and serving of all stakeholders: Google has become one of the largest platforms that provides the best search results on the internet and has gained the appreciation of a huge number of people all over the world. It has been successful in providing its users with the best satisfaction while searching for their topics of interest. Google is renowned of producing the best results of the searches and makes the most of the expectations of the consumers. In this away it has been able to create a loyal consumer base that had crossed the consumer base of many other rival organizations (Bray, 2016). It has been successful in establishing a powerful position in the rank 1 position of all the similar organizations and had surpassed many others in establishing a brand name for itself. It had surpassed organizations like WebCrawler and Infoseek which used to be the most dominating firms in the market. Not only them, it had also surpassed Bing of the Microsoft, yahoo and many others as well. It has established a market that mainly covers for about 65% of the global market share. Statistics have stated that there is usually about 3.5 billion searches everyday on an average which is found to be much higher than the searches done on the other websites. Therefore, in order to keep the loyal customer base intact and to attract more and more customer base, Google has always tried to incorporate services so that the best outcome is received by the citizens of different nations (Cao et al., 2014). Google has been believed to expand it reaches to a variety of streams and ventures. It has established a number of advertising platforms along with a digital book publishing space. It has also been successful in establishing its hold in the social networking zones. With the expansions made in the different fields it has become the most successful organization. It has been even seen to buy a large number of companies about more than hundreds in number by purchasing billions of sums over it. The purchased companies were found to belong to various industries like from robotics to even smart home devices and even to intangibles such as the voice recognition technologies. Although a number of various privacy concerns have been raised by different concerned authorities over a large number of years, however many customers and supporters look into the issue otherwise (Toy Hay, 2014). There are many advertising companies who have been excessively successful in displaying their ads to the ordinary citizens and thereby helping ton increase awareness among the various citizens regarding a particular product. Very attractive advertisements displayed with sponsored links alongside search results for the key words not only provide the companies with benefits but also gives a large amount of profit for the Google corporations well (Lopez, Marin Ca;deron, 2016). Besides this the other strategies that have been proposed by google is to attract a large number of customer through the varieties of services it has started for the global population. Some of them are the most popular web Browser called the Google Chrome that has gained appreciation because of its simplistic handling that provides no hassle but a simplistic surfing (Shafavi Shukur, 2014). The email system initiated by Google has also helped supporters by providing a huge number of space which was much greater than the rival mailing servers. It has provided a video watching site regarding any query like from scientific experiments to cooking classes to films. Others involve the Android system used globally and the google + which is a similar social networking site like Facebook (Vienot, Garcia Nieh, 2014). Google has an X-ray department that has world cut technologies that utilizes exciting and cutting edge technique that has the capability to change the world. Google respecting privacy and still maintaining profitability: Given its business model, Google is bound to collect data on its users activities, location, time of login and so on. But in order to do so, the company has to bear in mind that it has to maintain an approach that does not hurt the privacy of its users (Weiss, 2014). Google has been earlier subjected to privacy breeching allegations. Such allegations have not only led the organization to pay millions of dollars as fine to Government authorities of various countries but also have been a prime reason of erosion of trust in the brand among users minds. Thus, the need of the hour for the Internet behemoth is to have a more ethical and governed Tracking system for its users which can help its users maintain their privacy and also enable the company to deliver superior value through its services beating the competition (Bryman Bell, 2015). A few recommendations on how to optimize its services have been listed. Services such as Google Dashboard should be more promoted to users which gives them clearer control of which information they wish to share with the company while browsing through its range of internet services. The service needs to be constantly upgraded by the tech giant to make sure the user gets the convenience of retrieving huge amount of information within fractions of seconds but not at the cost of losing out own information without free will (Shaw Barry, 2015). Services like Street View which have been earlier a hub of controversies need to be rightly offered to users. The service must ensure to keep peoples faces, vehicle registration plates to be anonymous while providing real time view of any desired location to its users (viewers) (Desjardins McCall, 2014). Further emphasizing on Google Adwords, which happens to be Googles cash cow maybe further worked upon to gain advertisers trust. Google needs to inform its advertiser exactly how many clicks on his/her advertisement link could get the link to what kind of ranking order among search results. In doing so, the advertiser will get a better understanding whether the ad is actually relevant to that segment or it needs to be placed in some other campaign (Speikermann et al., 2015). The right to be forgotten ruling in the EU needs to be more stringently adhered to. Though it is hard to take a decision on contents to be screened and displayed, the company must dedicate enough resources to make sure that it doesnt get embroiled in major lawsuits especially with Governments (Nofer et al., 2014). The Do not Track call to action must come up with every upgraded version of Google Chrome. The unified Privacy Agreement commissioned on March 1, 2012 should be improvised to become more lucid, giving the user a profound understanding of the information the user is going to divulge to the company in the course of his activities in the company services. In spite of lofty privacy agreements, there has been breach of trust from Googles end a number of times leaving Governments and users in shock and awe. Thus, adhering to the mentioned terms is the only concern for the Big Bull. So, in a nutshell, it may be said that developing trust among its users through transparency and optimized servicing of requests is the key to unlocking huge revenue coffers for the Giant (Boreale Paolini, 2015). Increasing global regulation of privacy and Googles operation: Privacy is a possession that must be maintained by an individual and is his birthright. No medium in the world has the right and audacity to inherit your privacy without sheer permission and reflects negligence in providing respect to that individual. Many nations have active organizations that are seen to be very particular about the privacy maintenance of each and every member of the nation. They have active monitoring sectors who perform their task very diligently and undergoes thorough researches and analysis to understand the extent of an organization in the private zone of citizens and lao look over any breaches in the policies on privacy maintained by that nation. Google is a site that mainly performs it excellence depending upon the information that it derives from the individuals either through track down system or by following the searches made by the organization on the shopping sites, asking for allowance on the phones through their android system thereby knowing a lot ab out a person that the person is himself unaware of ("Google Privacy Breach", 2017). A poll has recently stated that about 52 percent of its users are very concerned about the level of privacy that google have crept into. A similar issue was found when it was told to the safari users that thy were protected when the actual case was not so. Google cookies were still installed when it was not supposed to. Google, admitting it as a mistake immediately took it away from the public sites. This situation was actively handled by the Federal Trade Commissions called the FTC who launched an investigation and found Google to be guilty. Google faced a huge loss in this scenario to pay $22.5 million as the fine for refraining from its privacy policies. Google also had to pay a total sum of about $17 million to settle the different charges brought out by 37 states and the District of Colombia. Even Google maintained breaching of privacy policies when it went around neighborhood collecting information and scanning data from unsecured networks of users. When caught by the Informati on commissioners office in UK, it apologized but even carried their work. In the United States also they had to pay a settlement of about $ 25, 000 to the Federal Communications commission for intentionally delaying their investigation on privacy policies. FCC released statements that the privacy breaches were intentional and were done deliberately to which google requested them to be confidential about their findings. This resulted in a loss of $7 million by the google. Even Google has faced huge obstacles while establishing its base in China. Government had put many restrictions to Google to spread their business. Moreover, its competitor called BAIDU in china had also given it a very hard time. Moreover, here Google had to agree to a number of Self-censor filters in accordance with Chinese Law because it never followed this policy before and always followed a free and open access to information. Google here had to provide many strategies to earn profit and also establish their ba se successfully. Therefore, the Google should strategize their business plans and develop markets in an ethical sense where the privacy of it consumers should be respected and not breached. In this way, it will get into less struggles with the regulating bodies of different nations and can face less penalties and break down of consumer trust on them (Martin, Borah Palmatier, 2014). Conclusion: From the above report, one can easily understand that the main loophole in business strategy is that it has no specific ethical considerations that an organization needs to have to gain consumer trust. In order to create a loyal base of customers, the organization also needs to be trustworthy which will be reflected in the activities and the strategies that it undertake. It should not be the scene that an organization in order to make profit are violating privacy rules and systems of the people of the nations (Paganini Pierluigi Paganini is Chief Information Security Officer at Bit4Id, 2017). The profit-making strategy and the quest for being the best in the industry should never overcome the ethical considerations and the moral virtues the company is based on. Trust creates a brand value and the brand name should not be affected by keeping consumers in darkness. Therefore, Google in his future ventures should be careful and strategize their approaches based on moral virtues and pri nciples so that its reputation does not get affected. The debate between Nature and Nurture concerning Gender Essay Example
The debate between Nature and Nurture concerning Gender Paper The nature versus nurture debate explaining sex and gender has been going on for around a century (AboutGender, 2003). Amongst the three approaches, I find sex and gender theories as the most persuasive, although a part of me is inclined towards biological determinism. I believe that femininity and masculinity is due to biological differences to a certain extent, as there is a difference between female anatomy, hormones and genes and that of a male. Schiebinger (1987, p. 9-70) claimed that women think according to feelings and intuitions while men are more objective. I have to admit that sometimes I make decisions based on what my heart tells me, although there is a conflict with making the right moves. One example whereby I followed my heart blindly is during my application to the National University of Singapore (NUS). Although I knew my grades were not good enough for the Law Faculty, due to my deep interest in that subject I still went ahead to apply it as my first choice. However, what convinced me that there are more shortfalls than merits to this theory is that even up until now, no human behavior has been proven by any researcher to be connected to genetic factors. Furthermore, I have an intention of challenging the notion that men have natural qualities that render their aggressiveness. In Singapore for example, increasing cases of maid abuse have been reported; most of the abuses were inflicted by female employers of foreign domestic helpers. Elshtain (1987) further justify my point by asserting that the level of aggressiveness of males vary widely across different cultures and women are expected to be more passive in certain cultures than others. Explaining differences in how men and women behave through biological factors is insufficient, and I prefer sex / gender theories as it focuses on the distinction between sex and gender. There are two biological sexes namely male and female. Gender, on the other hand, encompasses heterosexuals, homosexuals, lesbians and gays. Biologically male babies can grow into any gender and this is due his socially and culturally influenced roles. Sex is biological while gender can be nurtured or developed. I was in an all girls Secondary School, and was exposed to the unconventional behavior of lesbians who are biologically females yet socialized as males. They even went to the extent of adopting a manly name and, walked like males and embodied masculine characteristics. An opposite example is in the article entitled Conundrum: When youre born with the wrong body whereby Julie Peters is a transsexual who dressed in female clothes and can think intuitively yet she was a biological male. As affirmed in the sex and gender article, homosexuals, lesbians and transsexuals argued that their sexuality is inborn and attempts to conform to society will be unnatural. While recognizing that sex is determined by the biological characteristics, gender characteristics on the other hand, is largely determined by social, cultural and historical contexts. In different societies and cultures, men and women are socialized into different roles (Giddens 1997, p. 108). The concept of nurture gains the upper hand in sex / gender theory. Oakley (1972, p. 54-55) did a fine job of illustrating three different New Guinea tribes and the different roles men and women fall into. In the first tribe, the Arapesh, both men and women assume passive roles that resemble the femininity in our own culture. In the second tribe which is Mundugumor, both sexes assume masculinity and both sexes are brought up to be independent. In the last tribe of the Tchambuli, the males behave like our females by gossiping, shopping and wearing ornaments while the women shave their heads and are assertive. In Singapore, women are expected to be graceful while the men are more domineering. In the Malay community here for example, the male is considered the man of the house, and when he makes reasonable decisions, his wife and children have the onus to listen to him. However, I agree with statement in the article that there are difficulties in distinguishing between sex and gender and between biology and social attributes. Giddens (1997, pg 109) criticized sex / gender theories as rigid, whereby society expects individuals to assume assigned roles as males or females. Importantly, I acknowledge that humans are not computers that can be programmed accordingly only by social or cultural characteristics. People can modify themselves, for example in the case of Julie Peters as described in the article following the sex and gender piece. Julie Peters undergone hormone treatments, electrolysis and face waxing to transform herself.
